The care and attention a child receives in its first years of life will have a strong influence on its development. Affection, stimulation, a healthy diet, reliable relationships and suitable healthcare will demonstrably raise the chances of a child successfully finishing school. Children from marginalised families cannot count on this foundation. The quality of education in Central America is precarious. According to UNESCO’s Third Regional Comparative and Explanatory Study (TERCE), primary school students in Nicaragua, Guatemala, and Honduras achieve the worst results. Vivamos Mejor intends to rectify this injustice through early intervention.

Our goal is to increase the numbers of socially disadvantaged children who complete primary education in these countries.

According to the United Nations Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean, young people with limited resources have little access to professional training. Yet such training demonstrably increases the chances of earning an income as well as helping to prevent poverty and juvenile delinquency. Studies also show that for young people entering the workforce in these areas, acquiring their first job is often an insurmountable hurdle. Seventy-six percent of young employees worldwide work in the informal economy, and more than 90% of that figure live in developing countries. In 2017, 19.4 % of Latin American young people in Latin America were neither apprenticed nor employed; this figure was twice as high among women.

Our goal is to give empowered and educated young adults the ability to earn a living under dignified working conditions and to shape their own future.

Our Contribution to the 2030 Agenda

With the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, the international community has created a framework for joint solutions to overcome the great challenges facing us – such as migration, climate change, environmental destruction, poverty and hunger. This agreement names 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which define the social, economic, and environmental policy milestones that should be reached worldwide by 2030. These goals apply to all countries – including Switzerland.

SDG1 No Poverty
SDG4 Quality Education
SDG5 Gender Equality
SDG8 Decent work and economic growth
SDG10 Reduced Inequalities

Our programmes are co-financed by the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation SDC, Federal Department of Foreign Affairs FDFA.
